A dose of peace and tranquility at Gilbert White’s House and Garden in Selborne

One of my favourite places to visit is Gilbert White’s House and Garden in Selborne. The setting in the heart of the Hampshire countryside is beautiful and always offers a good dose of peace, tranquillity – and inspiration! Wandering around the house and gardens, you get a fascinating insight into the life of Gilbert White – a charming English eccentric who built a worldwide reputation from his gardening hobby. Although an amateur, he was one of the first real ecologists, and his book The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne is one of the most published books in the English language. I find his achievements and approach inspiring as they show what is possible when you pursue a dream.

While visiting, I always like to embark on one of the many beautiful walks the area has to offer, and I thoroughly recommend a stroll up the hill to Selborne Common along Gilbert White’s own zigzag path. When you return, be sure to reward your efforts with a delicious slice of homemade cake at the lovely tea parlour and a browse around the excellent gift shop.
